About Us

Weddington Elementary serves kindergarten through fifth-grade students and is located in Matthews. We are dedicated to upholding our mission. We are proud of our family-like staff, which includes veteran teachers committed to the Weddington community. We provide a variety of dynamic and engaging student programs, including STEAM, Music, Art, a Dual Language Program, and numerous after-school teacher-led clubs. We are proud of our students' high levels of achievement.

Meet Our School Leaders

Katie Colson (Principal)

About Ms. Colson

Ms. Katie Colson brings more than 24 years of experience in education. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from Auburn University, a Master of Education and an Education Specialist degree from Troy State University, and a post-graduate certification in administration from Wingate University.

Ms. Colson began her teaching career in 2001 in Columbus, Georgia. Over the years, she taught grades 3–5 and served as an instructional coach in several Georgia districts. In 2022, she relocated to North Carolina and joined Union County Public Schools as an instructional coach at Weddington Elementary. From 2023–2025, she served as the assistant principal at Weddington before being named principal in 2025. She is excited to lead the Wildcat community and is committed to fostering collaboration, safety, and academic excellence.

Ms. Colson has one son who proudly attends Weddington Elementary. Outside of school, she enjoys cheering on Auburn Tigers football, spending time with family and friends, and reading. She values building strong relationships with students, staff, and families and believes in being a highly visible and approachable leader who partners with the community to ensure success for all Wildcats.

Dr. Genevieve Leydig (Assistant Principal)

About Dr. Leydig

Dr. Genevieve Leydig is excited to serve as the new Assistant Principal of Weddington Elementary. She began her educational career 15 years ago teaching in Broward County Public Schools located in South Florida. She has taught multiple grade levels, subject areas, and exceptionalities. Prior to relocating to Waxhaw, she was serving as an administrator with Broward Schools for over 7 years. She received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Education in Special Education from the University of Florida. She then went on to earn a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

When not at school, Dr. Leydig enjoys spending time with her husband, her three children and their family dog. She is a huge Florida Gators fan and loves Disney, fishing, and dancing.

Dr. Leydig truly believes in the power of education and welcomes all community stakeholders to join her in making this an amazing year at Weddington Elementary School!
